Cammack Pushes Domestic Phosphate Production

Bipartisan letter requests Critical Mineral designation for key fertilizer component

Washington, DC — Last week, U.S. Representatives Kat Cammack (R-FL-03) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-19) led a bipartisan effort urging the U.S. Department of the Interior to add phosphate to the nation’s Critical Minerals List.

The letter, signed by more than 60 bipartisan lawmakers, thanks Secretary Burgum for including potash on the draft list but re-emphasizes the importance of also adding phosphate. It explains that designating phosphate as a critical mineral will help bring production back to the United States, strengthen supply chains, reduce reliance on adversarial nations like China, lower input costs for farmers, and safeguard America’s food security.

"Phosphate, like potash, is indispensable to global food production and U.S. agriculture. With no substitutes in farming, disruptions in phosphate supply chains have immediate and far-reaching consequences for American producers, food prices, and national security. Farmers across the country are already feeling the strain of market volatility and supply pressures tied to phosphate availability,” said Reps. Cammack and Panetta. “Agriculture is national security, which is why we applaud Secretary Burgum for including potash on the draft Critical Minerals List and urge the same recognition for phosphate, as it is essential to safeguarding America’s food security."
