Reps. Cammack & Craig, Sens. Ernst & Smith To Designate March 24 National Women In Agriculture Day

March 24, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – During Women’s History Month and National Agriculture Week, Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), Representative Angie Craig (D-MN-02), and Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL-03)—members of the Senate and House Agriculture Committees—have called for Thursday, March 24 to be designated as "National Women In Agriculture Day."

Introduced in the Senate on Tuesday by Senators Ernst and Smith, the resolution calls for March 24 to officially honor the importance of women in agriculture, honoring American women’s vital roles as producers, educators, leaders, and beyond who help agriculture prosper both at home and abroad. Representatives Cammack and Craig introduced the companion resolution in the House today.

"In 2020, agriculture replaced tourism as Florida's number-one economic driver. Home to dozens of commodities and incredible producers, women lead the way in the Sunshine State in agribusiness, education, advocacy, and more," said Rep. Kat Cammack. "Women in agricultural industries not only help our country prosper, but they understand how important our food supply is to our national security. I'm proud to lead this effort with my fellow lawmakers and extend my sincerest gratitude to the women in agriculture nationwide."

"All across the country, there are brilliant and dedicated women working tirelessly to feed, clothe, and fuel the world. Women like these have always played a leading role in American agriculture—but have not always gotten the recognition they deserve for their contributions to the ag. economy," said Rep. Angie Craig. "Today, I'm proud to join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in recognizing the work of these women by officially designating March 24, 2022 as 'National Women In Agriculture Day.'"

"As we observe Women’s History Month and National Agriculture Week. We recognize women who were pioneers in their respective fields," said Senator Joni Ernst. "Women have always played leading roles in American agriculture, from farming and research to agricultural education and agribusiness. This week, I invite all Americans to join me in celebrating National Women In Agriculture Day."

"Agriculture is the backbone of Minnesota's diverse economy," said Senator Tina Smith. "Women have always played an essential role in this sector, and I'm proud to support this bipartisan effort to set aside a day during Women's History Month and National Agriculture Week where we step back and recognize the women who have been central to our agricultural achievements and success."

Original House co-sponsors at the time of the bill's introduction include Reps. Cammack, Craig, Bishop (D-GA), Balderson (R-OH), Lawson (D-FL), Hartzler (R-MO), Panetta (D-CA), Costa (D-CA), Bustos (D-IL), Brown (D-OH), Hayes, (D-CT), Khanna (D-CA), Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands), Davis (R-IL), Feenstra (R-IA), and Axne (D-IA).
